Central American Cedar/Cedro

Family: MELIACEAE

Distribution: In all countries from Mexico to Argentina except Chile.

General Characteristics:

Working Properties and Uses:

Works well with both hand and machine tools. Used for cabinet-making, joinery, boat building and veneers.

Heartwood:

Pinkish brown to reddish brown. Darkening after exposure. Has cedary odour.

Sapwood:

Pinkish to white.

Grain:

Generally straight, some interlocked.

Texture:

Fine to medium.

Durability:

Durable heartwood, weathers well.

Drying:

Easy. Pre-heating to control gum release is recommended.

Movement:

Slight.

Strength:

Considered nearly as strong as Central American Mahogany.

Weight:

450 to 500 kg./cu.m.

Alternative Species

Mahoganies, Meranti, Utile, Sapele.
